I read so much that I try to use my Kindle Unlimited and library ebooks to feed my addiction. Melissa F. Olson and Scarlett make me actually PAY for a book, I like the series that much.😍This book is set three years after the last one. She and Eli are in a loving and committed relationship. She's had a quiet three years, not much going on past the usual. However she's been estranged from Molly and Jessie.
Molly asked her to move out because Scarlett was causing too much drama in her life.
Jessie had a crush on her and wanted her to get away from her job because as a cop he wasn't crazy about breaking the law.
When the book begins Jessie is getting a divorce from his ghost writer wife who made him famous. People recognize him and he's not happy, in a funk. Molly has reinvented herself as a college coed and lives with other young women.
Molly reached out to Scarlett in a way Scarlett knew she had to help. When she reaches Molly there's a scene of carnage, all her roommates are dead and Molly has fed off them.
Scarlett set up a cleaning scenario and helps Molly figure out what is going on.
This brings back the other characters regular readers have become familiar with, and gets Jessie back into detective mode.
This is a great addition to the series. It's set up someone new to the books doesn't feel lost, but I recommend reading them all.
Melissa and Patricia Briggs are my go-to authors at the moment when I want a little fantasy in my life.

Midnight Curse Disrupted Magic Book 1 edition by Melissa F Olson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Oh, I was so happy to see this book come up for sale. The return to Scarlett's story did not disappoint. She is older, and wiser. Some time has passed, and with that, she is a much stronger character, and person. I loved this story and am hopeful that Olson writes more in this world!
I really enjoyed Olson’s Boundary Magic series and was very excited to pick up the first book in her new Disrupted Magic series. I didn’t realize that the Disrupted Magic series is basically a continuation of the Scarlett Bernard trilogy. I would definitely recommend reading the Scarlett Bernard trilogy first. Despite all the recapping in this book I felt slightly lost and kept feeling like I was missing a lot of important context and background for this book. This was a decent urban fantasy but not knowing all the history behind the multitude of characters in this book really hampered my ability to enjoy the story.
I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was very well done. I would recommend listening to on audiobook if you like audiobooks.
This was a decent investigative urban fantasy. Some aspects of it were pretty typical the heroine runs herself ragged, there are werewolves and vampires, the paranormal is kept hidden from the rest of the world. The idea of Scarlett being a null was interesting but reminded me of the Parasol Protectorate series. I also somewhat enjoyed Scarlett’s huge dog, but that reminded me of Mouse from the Dresden Files. In short this was a decent urban fantasy but not all that unique or creative; it seemed to pull things from a lot of existing urban fantasy series.
Overall this was a good, typical urban fantasy. I didn’t love the story or the characters but they were all decent. I struggled with all the background that I was missing despite the recapping, so I probably would have liked this better if I had read the Scarlett Bernard series first. However, since I didn’t love this….I don’t plan on finishing this series or going back to read the first three Scarlett books.
The book is labeled as "Book 1," but it actually in the middle of a series.
There were too many instances of references that didn't make any sense, or character knowledge that was assumed.
On the down side, the character, nominally 27, acts like she is 15. I didn't care about the character at all by the end of the book.
I have picked up books on the middle of other series and become enchanted, bought the previous books and subsequent books in the series. But not this book series, and not this author.
If it wasn't a purchase, it would already be at the used book store for credit.
On the plus side of this book, the character actually grew a little bit.
I really enjoy the world that Mrs. Olson has created. She's created a different take on the Vampire/Werewolf/Witch genre that adds a new element which creates an interesting dynamic. I'll admit I was a bit curious how this book would go since the previous trilogy of these characters ended "nice and neat." But I was delighted to have the chance to re-enter the world of Scarlett Bernard.
My only complaint is that Scarlett still seems to make some obvious stupid choices which I'd hoped she'd grown past. But it didn't detract from the book and my enjoyment. I'm already looking forward to the next book!
I am a Unlimited subscriber and I bought this book. Yes, Melissa F. Olson is an author whose books I buy when I could read them anyway. Yes, They are that good. I still haven't decided if I like Scarlett or Lex better. It must be a tie. I read this book in one day and the dishwasher didn't get loaded, etc.
Scarlett is back and so are Jesse and Molly. Three years have passed in Scarlett's life and she has grown and matured just as real people hopefully do. Scarlett's not perfect, but she is confident and capable. Scarlett doesn't hesitate to drop everything to help Molly and there are serious consequences to that.
But read the book. It will work if you haven't read the earlier Scarlett books, but hey, read them all.
