This is the story about family secrets, life altering dysfunction, and the lasting effects they can have on any one individual. No one is exempt. Craig Samuels has two main objectives. The first, to bring to the surface the issues that cause families to become divided. The second, to heighten the reader’s awareness to the signs that are all too often ignored until it is too late. In his generation, and the next, the total breakdown of the family structure is often too familiar. Craig has noticed one of the main reasons is an unwillingness or fear of addressing the elephant in the room.

Having had the great fortune of being on the recieving end of Mr. Samuels' spiritual guidance, I know he has a kind and generous heart. In this his first book, I learned the struggle he endured breaking away from the expectation of failure that seems to surround so many of us.
This memoir takes us back half a century, to industrial mid-Michigan. It tells a reflection of a boys life, told to us with the benefit of retrospect. Indeed, the courage of the author is displayed in his willingness to examine the motivations of the antagonists of his youth.
This book is a tool for healing.
I thank Mr. Samuels for sharing his path to personal growth and look forward to reading more from him.

My Mother Guilt My Father Sin The Death of Innocence Craig D Samuels 9780998829548 Books Reviews

"It would be years before we would be what we considered safe in our own home ". The death of innocence is hauntingly captured in that line for me.

The writing is mournfully beautiful, the realism of which grafted me into the script. The written word is so powerful and consuming, the vivid imagery of which compelled me to feel the pain, the longings, every unspoken need and desire. Even the more exceptional was the author's ability to allow the reader to experience hope in a light dimmed but never snuffed out. The proof is the fact Mr. Samuels was able to pen such a tragedy with intricate details, determination and eloquence. The story includes words of wisdom that are therapeutic. Words of healing for the mind, heart and soul indelibly stained, are poignantly spoken throughout.

From nobody's boy to somebody's man. One cannot deny the death of innocence but one must celebrate the life and fresh breath of the man.

The book is well worth the time and effort to read, to live in and from which to learn. I invite you to a celebration of manhood. I bid you welcome, turn the pages and travel this road and see for yourself. The trip is indisputably worth the cost of admission.
This book is a vivid portrayal of a troubled family from the perspective of the author that will touch your soul. It tells a sad story of what goes on behind the door of that one neighbor's house that you travel past everyday, you know the one that appears quiet and well kept from the outside when in reality hell is just on the other side. This book dives deep into the mind of a child trying to make sense of a world he didn't ask to in taking you on an emotional roller coaster as you walk beside him through his painful journey. The author does a masterful job of balancing this autobiography by telling the heart wrenching story of the relationship with his family during his childhood while expressing the joys of just being a kid escaping the hell at home playing in the streets of his neighborhood. He tells his story in graphic detail from the perspective of a child while offering encouragement, insight and counsel from his perspective as an adult having survived his torment. There are clear references to generational dysfunction that will open your eyes and encourage you to look deeper into your own family's past present and future to help build a stronger family bond. This is a must read!
Greetings...I just completed an engaging read titled, "My Mother's Guilt, My Father's Sin...The Death Of Innocence." The book is authored by Mr. Craig Samuels of Flint, Michigan for most of his life. So, this is my attempt to give a review of the masterpiece.

The book is a recapitulation of the trials of growing up in an "African-American" environment of dysfunction (defined in any way you feel imaginably possible). It's about a boy who spent the greater part of his life even into manhood trying to figure out certain simple facets of life most people take for granted. From an absentee Father, absentee Mother, absentee sibling(s), and absentee extended family to a full collection of family, but sometimes not in the proper form, this book crosses all boundaries of what one would want to understand about such a situation.

The book is a skillful rendition of a "real life" situation, all to common; however, it is delivered with a style of prose that is captivating, engaging, and mesmerizing. It touches the very core of inner human existence and shares the emotions of anger, joy, resentment, disgust, excitement, happiness, pain, etc., directly from the written word...trust me, you will feel the emotions. The book is an easy read an not too long...I finished it over a weekend while doing everything else I normally do on the weekend (it's about 260 pages). When you read the book, you will indelibly wonder where this man receive his PhD and why haven't you heard of him before now.

So, to whose benefit would I say this book is written?
1. The educator can use this book to create awareness or give a troubled student a start in dealing with family issues.
2. The psychologist can use this book as real-life reference material against which to apply scholastic hypotheses.
3. The Social Worker can use the real life examples to help with certain similar actions in his/her current caseload.
4. The Clergy can use it to assist in counseling.
5. The troubled child can use it to learn ways to seek help when others won't listen.
6. The grown up still dealing with painful childhood issues can use it to address/readdress/tackle these issues from a more holistic perspective.
7. The Social Scientist can use it to develop applicable remedies for similar situations.
8. The individual can use it to first understand and develop compassion for an existing situation he/she may not otherwise understand. And then the individual can use it for direct introspection to either figure out things not understood or seek the proper help to deal with certain issues.
9 & 10....everybody else who can read and understand the English language can get some benefit out of this book.
I really enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover. It is definitely a page turner. I would highly recommend this book for anyone from teenager well into adulthood. There are so many lessons that words would not do this book justice. Great job, Craig! This is a masterpiece!
