Sometimes "Choose Your Own Adventures" can be gimmicky, with more attention paid to the novelty of multiple story options than the actual story, characters or writing. I get that; they can still be fun.Well, this book is in a whole different world. Yes, you do reach decision points at which you have to decide whether to climb the ladder or look behind the tapestry. But that is a small and almost inconsequential part of the overall reading experience. This book is good, and I mean immersive, elegant, well-written good.
The narrative proceeds at a dreamy pace, with spare but carefully crafted sentences that gently carry you deep into the magician's house. We don't really know anything about our hero - who he is or why he's there, or what his history is; we just know he's young and is more or less a servant or errand boy. We don't know who the magician is. What we do learn is that the magician's home is a fun house of magic portals, shifting rooms, odd furnishings and strange residents. (Keep away from the dark corners; stray magic gathers there like dust bunnies and you may be unpleasantly surprised.)
All of this is presented in slightly formal and oddly stilted language that feels like it is being whispered in your ear. This is emphasized by the narrator's use of the second person singular. "You" do this and then "you" do that. When used properly, as it is here, I think this adds a detached, almost ethereal tone and yet an immediacy, to any narrative. "You" are there, right now.
And I guess it is appropriate that a book titled "The Magician's House" is mostly about you in fact being in and walking about the magician's house. Actually, while you aren't sneaking, you are pretty close to lurking - especially with all of those hidden peekholes and hidden doors. This is just fascinating and compelling stuff, and this book is a remarkable and satisfying find. It will justify all of your previous Kindle freebie searches. (By the way, I have an old Kindle Touch and the choose-you-own option worked very smoothly on it; I wasn't sure that would necessarily be the case.)
So, all in all a nice find and a nice choice. Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

In the Magician House You Say Which Way edition by DM Potter Children eBooks Reviews
I remember reading "choose your own adventure" books back when I was a teenager -- Citadel of Chaos and the like, by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone if I recall. I loved them! This book, In the Magician's House, was just as enjoyable, if not more so because of the generally lighter mood, and a genre that's a little closer to my taste. It's a lot of fun.
I also admire the writer for pulling it all together so well and making it work on a , something the old paperbacks from the 1980s didn't have to worry about. This adventure worked flawlessly for me. And... I get to do it again and again, with a different path each time. -)
The author begins by stating that you will be told how the book starts but that YOU will be the one to decide how it ends. Setting for the reader is a magician’s house where you live and work. There is always a mystery as you explore its rooms.. The reader might be asked to find things or go to places in the house. Dreams are always lurking, and you might be transported to places outside the house. In short, one never knows what will happen or where you might end up. A scenario is painted for you and you must choose your destiny.
Most days you would start by eating breakfast, but finding the kitchen is not always simple. On the first morning, the reader wakes up in his turret in the tower of the house. When you feel something cold on your face, it turns out to be a frog. You get dressed in the dark and hope the stairway will lead to the kitchen. This morning you have found a corridor that stretches to the left and right. On the left you find a suit of armor, to the right there is a hole in the floor with a ladder sticking up from it. Now you must make your first choice! Depending on your decision, you will continue to stop and investigate or remain on the path that you currently pursuing. Throughout the book the reader has numerous choices and paths to follow. You might find yourself in a classroom, a tenement, or meet a character in history. Will you succeed and find Mrs. Noogles, the cook, making your breakfast or perhaps find yourself in another part of the house or even some other place? If you don’t like your choice the first time, you can always go back and start again.
This book of nearly one hundred pages provides lots of entertainment and adventure for readers age nine and above. Because of the diversity of outcomes, a child will want to reread and revisit it over and over again. Boys and girls in the middle grades will particularly like the element of being in control over the outcome, but I would venture to say many parents and adults will enjoy reading it as well. Highly recommended book for lovers of magic or adventure.
The Magician's House is a magical place, obviously. It is enchanted, ever changing and seems to have a mind of its own. Author Potter weaves an adventure in word pictures that allow you to imagine every detail, texture, site and sound, as you discover the secrets hidden within.
As the reader, you are the main character and free to travel and discover the wonders of this mysterious place. Furthermore, as a longtime resident, yourself, you have a few powers of your own. Even as the house changes form, familiar residents and rooms appear or disappear, never before seen doors and hidden passageways come and go, you must choose your own path.
Do you open the door or take the stairs? There are clues everywhere. Which do you use and which are a magical test. When your adventure comes to a fork in the road, as they say, do you continue onward and upward, climb down the ladder into a hole that just appeared in the floor or maybe, simply fold up the hole and save it for another day.
Just when you think your adventure has come to an end, you may choose to return to the beginning, try another path and a different adventure. One can only imagine the surprises that wait in that new room that just appeared. As with many D M Potter adventures, you are in charge, some of the time. Choose wisely!
