I bought this book because I was borrowing the series from the library and the library does not own the last in the series. Having read the whole series, I can highly recommend it. The characters, real and fictional, are engaging and human. So many times beloved historical characters are romanticized to the point of seeming plastic, but the author portrays them as being human and sometimes flawed (as we all are). I like that the author weaves the fictional family seamlessly into the historical events, which is a device that is not always easy to accomplish. He gives notes at the end of the chapters to explain/expand on the historical events in the books, much appreciated by this reader. I'm LDS and attended additional religious classes as a teenager and young adult that covered the history of my religion, and I learned some things I didn't know! The last book provided a satisfying end to the saga while providing that bittersweet sensation that readers experience at the end of a beloved series.

The Work and the Glory Volume 9 All Is Well Gerald N Lund 9781590387276 Books Reviews

Just one of a series of 9 books and I couldn't put any of them down. Read cover to cover. I was so happy to see that I could purchase them as I had been told they were now out of print. I had read them once before and wanted a set of my own. Gerald N. Lund is a great writer. You are hooked on his works.
I have read this series twice. I have enjoyed the historic content and the information given for this saga of one family's journey in a young America. Their hopes and how they handled disappointments can relate to all of us. The harsh realities of these hard working people is a testament to how this country became what it is. Both the good and the bad.
We ordered this as a replacement book, our teenage kids took it on vacation with us and it was lost. We love the series. It really helps a person understand the early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It has helped our kids understand the history of those who came before them in their faith. (This book is not to be read by itself, but in context of the whole series.) Truly a faith promoting book.
Read the Work and the Glory series, ordered an extra copy, historical mention of one of my ancestors!
Great book series!
My teenage daughter got into this book series and even though it is fiction she learned a lot about church history, and it inspired her to learn more. It was also great to see her testimony grow through the spiritual experiences in the book.
I'm not sure if I'm suppose to review the book or the seller. The book is great. Very historically accurate and helpful in understanding the events that led to the exodus of the Latter-Day-Saint pioneers from the "City of Joseph". Also helpful in understanding the apostasy and anti-Mormon feelings that were going on at that time.

The Seller got the book to me in a timely manner. It was in good condition (new). I was expecting Hard Cover instead of paperback, but I didn't read the information about the book that carefully prior to buying it. Anyway I'm still enjoying the book.
While my wife was recovering from surgery, I read this entire series to her. When she asked me to read Volume 1 to her I would have never guessed that 6 weeks and I don't know how many thousands of pages later, we would be finishing the last volume. While my wife is a devout Mormon, I am anything but and under normal circumstances I am sure that I never would have read a book like this - much less 9 volumes!
Volume 9, as is the case with the first 8 volumes, is a story told in such a way that it requires the reader to read slowly and thoughtfully to get the most out of it. The advantage to telling a story with this many words is that Mr Lund has the luxury of taking his time to develop the personalities of the main fictional characters and he does this effectiveley. By the time that father Steed perishes, I felt like I had lost a real family member. The depictions of real characters in history such as Joseph Smith, Emma Smith, and Brigham Young are done with considerable care and respect and yet they will come to life for you and make you appreciate the hardships they overcame in this story of the amazing beginning of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Even though Mr Lund is a Latter Day Saint, the story is written in such a way that it will touch the hearts of believers and non believers alike.
