John Fritz became homeless at age 16. He quit school and became a tramp hitchhiking back and forth across the country. He tried many times to quit drinking and settle down, but he failed each time. This was an excellent read, not only because I am from the same small town, but because he gives such insight into a life that is so different from what most of us know, John is brutally honest about his upbringing, his choices, and his troubles, and taught me how painful and consuming addiction can be. It is also a lesson for all of us that even though we might think we know someone, they may be going through a hell that we can't imagine. His life could have ended up so differently at any point during the last 40-45 years, but I am glad to see that he survived it and is thriving.
Go on a wild ride with John Fritz as he shares the story of his life. Heartbreaking, hilarious, entertaining, and educational - this quick read is well worth anyone's time. Purchase this book for your own enjoyment and feel good about supporting an amazing man at the same time.
I am now the proud owner of a copy signed by the author ... the title (to me) is "why" he wrote it ... to let anyone know that they can change their life no matter how hopeless they feel ... it is a book about a life as a hitchhiker, a rail rider, an alcoholic and a drug user. It is a "raw" book, he doesn't mince words about what he did, or the consequences he faced.
I have known John and his family since 1971 and been only partly aware of some of the things he describes in this book.
Here is what I wrote to him when I had finished the book
"It was bad,
It was good...
It was wonderful ...
You are amazing.
The "bad" is because I had never known just how bad life was for your family. Oh, as time went by, there were enough hints and stories to have an idea. And these last few years, I pretty much knew that ... it was much worse than I had imagined. And I know that probably none of the 6 of you ever wanted anyone to know. And I cried for the child that was ...
"Good" was because before I even started ... I knew the ending to the book ... no matter the horrors revealed in the pages ... I knew that you were going to be changing your life ... and once again hugging the people you loved (and getting hugged back with an intensity you probably had not dared hope for)
"Wonderful" ... because you could paint a picture with your words ... of the campfires, of the cold, of the unlikely friendships ... and for a short time ... your words took me with you on your journey.
And you are amazing ... because you found a way (with help, yes ... but YOU are the one who had to want it) to hope and to believe that you could make it happen.
Beyond that ... I am at a loss for words!

I have to say this is the best book I've ever read. I started it yesterday morning and read it all the way through the end before I put it down.

Since I grew up in the same small town and knew everyone he named before he hit the road, I found it extremely interesting.
This is a sad story of a young man who didn't have the guidance or support at home and basically had to find a way to take care of himself. He went to the extremes and it took him to lots of dark places.
I'm glad he is doing well now and hope the rest of his life is filled with positive people and things.
